I live in New York, I am used to foreign diplomats pooping all over our laws. New York is a goddamn sanctuary city for diplomats who want to park wherever they want to.

At least our mayor cares and tries to get the international community to do the right thing.

Donald Trump, so-called President of the United States, doesn’t seem to give a good goddamn about international dictators coming over here and doing whatever they want.

Donald Trump invited Turkish dictator Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the White House. That alone is a sad signal to the international community. But the Guardian reports that Erdoğan’s ambassadors decided to park their fists where they don’t belong.

Nine people were hurt and two arrests were made during an altercation at the Turkish ambassador’s residence in the US capital during a visit by Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

According to witnesses, a brawl erupted when Erdoğan’s security detail attacked protesters carrying the flag of the Kurdish PYD party outside the residence. A local NBC television affiliate reported Erdoğan was inside the building at the time.

In response to an attack on peaceful protesters by foreign nationals, Donald Trump said: “…”

Secretary of State Exxon Tillerson has also been quiet about the altercation, but the State Department did release a statement. From NBC:

The State Department said in a statement Wednesday that the U.S. was “communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms.”

“Violence is never an appropriate response to free speech, and we support the rights of people everywhere to free expression and peaceful protest,” said spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

Likely, there is no legal recourse to take against Erdoğan’s men.

Those guards aren’t likely to suffer from any fallout, according to Joseph Giacalone, a retired New York City detective and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

Foreign security details are protected under diplomatic immunity afforded to their countries’ leaders, he said. If protesters feel as if their civil rights were trampled, he added, they have no recourse under international law.

“It’s going nowhere,” Giacalone told NBC News. “This is not American police. There’s no Civilian Complaint Review Board. (Protesters) can cry or scream, but the guards are covered.”

Again, we can’t reliably get these people to pay their parking tickets.

But former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Samantha Power, gets that there is a larger issue here:

What Erdoğan’s men did was… disrespectful to the United States of America. Imagine if you invite a man to your home, and he beats your own children. Imagine he beats them because he knows you don’t have the courage or the will to stop him. That’s essentially what happened on Embassy Row today. Somebody that we invited beat up our people, because he knows that our leader is too weak to stop him.

Donald Trump hasn’t just embarrassed America. He’s diminished it. Maybe the rural white people who still support him are used to being cowardly and powerless, but for many of us, watching a strong man’s goons beat up protesters in our own country is a low moment.
